About Us

The India Health Systems Collaborative is a growing network of health systems researchers in India and beyond. It is an integrated ecosystem of researchers that work in close collaboration with decision makers. Founded in late 2018, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the collaborative was built with the dual purpose of responding to policy questions that are critical to India’s health system and fostering a well-connected community of health system researchers in the country. It is one of the few health systems research consortia in the country.

Through its key areas of work namely Collaborative Research, Capacity Building, and Engagement with Policymakers, IHSC focuses on generating and using scientific evidence towards strengthening the Indian health system. Some of the most premier educational institutes working on health systems research in the country are members of the collaborative. In addition to research, IHSC puts equal focus on building technical capacity of researchers and promoting engagement between the researchers and decision makers.

Vision

Strengthen India’s health system through
collaborative research.

Mission

Build and provide an interdisciplinary platform for collaborative research to generate evidence for policy interventions on challenges confronting the country’s health system within the national and global context and to strengthen capacity for health systems research.

Why this
Collaborative?

Health systems research in India has been growing slowly, reflected through the limited number of publications in peer reviewed journals and its modest impact on health policies thus far. This is mainly attributed to the following factors.

Limited funding towards this discipline

Community Low

Small and fragmented health systems
research community

Opportunity Low

Limited opportunities to interact with
each other and with policymakers

IHSC is a collaborative platform that connects researchers across diverse geographies. It provides members with funding and engagement opportunities. IHSC also builds the capacity of researchers through training and collaborations among each other and with international experts. In doing so, we aim to create a pool of health systems researchers who will help governments move towards evidence-based policy making.

AREA OF WORK

Research

OBJECTIVE

Promote collaborative research

Generate evidence on policy relevant issues

Generating evidence relevant to health policy-making in the country is a core objective of the collaborative. The idea is to bring together researchers spread across different institutions, disciplines, and geographies, on to a single collaborative platform. This will help break silos and promote synergy between researchers and other health systems stakeholders. The research collaborative will have the independence to conduct high-quality research that aligns with the existing policy dialogue. IHSC is in the process of creating an Information Hub which is a repository of health systems knowledge products that will be accessible to all members of the collaborative.

AREA OF WORK

Capacity
Building

OBJECTIVE

Build and strengthen the technical capacity of health systems researchers

Building and strengthening the technical capacity of researchers to undertake health systems research is an equally important core objective of the collaborative. The capacity building initiatives in the form of courses and workshops are designed to train and create more health systems researchers in the country. Moreover, research studies are undertaken by teams comprising researchers across levels of seniority and experience, presenting opportunities for mentorship and cross learning.

AREA OF WORK

Policy
Engagement

OBJECTIVE

Promote evidence-based policy making through engagement among the research community, policymakers, and other health systems stakeholders

Ultimately, the idea behind strengthening research capacity and generating evidence on pertinent policy issues is to promote evidence-based health policy making in India. IHSC’s style of functioning is designed to involve researchers, policymakers, and other health systems decision-makers equally in understanding priority areas that require the attention of the research community while ensuring complete independence to researchers in terms of methodology and research findings.
